Founded in 2013, the TWGHs Kitty Woo Music Development Centre is a service unit under Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs), the largest charitable organisation in Hong Kong. Dedicated to advancing music education across TWGHs schools, the Centre provides comprehensive programmes in instrumental and choral training, performance planning, and international exchanges, having nurtured over 20,000 students to date.
Elevating Performances & Global Horizons
The Centre actively builds premier performance platforms for promising students, providing high-quality, broad-scope opportunities to showcase their talents. Key initiatives include:
Large-scale TV performances: coordinating TWGHs students to take part in the 2024 “CCTV Spring Festival Gala” and the 2025 “TWGHs 155th Anniversary Charity Gala”.
Thematic variety showcases: producing “TWGHs Variety Show to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China”, “Kindness and Warmth Across Hong Kong – Joint School Fiesta in Celebration of TWGHs Beyond 155 Years”, and the “Love Our Home, Treasure Our Country – TWGHs Joint School Music and Dance Variety Performance” series.
To broaden students’ international horizons, the Centre actively leads TWGHs school teams and joint-school delegations to participate in competitions and exchanges across Asia, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, and Mainland China. Over the years, students have accumulated over 150 awards in both local and international music competitions.
In addition, the Centre operates the TWGHs Joint-School Choirs, providing dedicated performance training for TWGHs Student Ambassadors. It also coordinates the recording of institutional anthems and school songs, as well as the development of music teaching materials for national identity education. Meanwhile, regular arrangements are made for students to attend concerts, cultivating their lifelong interest in music and the arts.
Enhancing Teaching Quality & Educational Research
To enhance the overall quality of music teaching and enrich students’ learning experience, the Centre has implemented TWGHs’ first Primary School Music Teachers’ Professional Development Scheme since the 2023/24 academic year. Through a range of initiatives including themed workshops, choral coaching, lesson observations with external reviewers, and overseas exchanges, the Centre has empowered a total of 80 music teachers across 15 affiliated primary schools, benefiting over 2,000 students to date.
In 2025, the Centre partnered with The Hong Kong Virtuoso Chorus, a charitable organisation dedicated to advancing choral education, to launch the territory’s first comprehensive study on the school choral ecosystem—the “Hong Kong Primary and Secondary School Choirs Census”. Supported by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme of the HKSAR Government for publication, the research report provides crucial data and sustainable directions for the development of school choral music in Hong Kong.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, the Centre will continue to work towards excellence in music education across all TWGHs schools. Through ongoing teacher empowerment, curriculum enhancement, and the integration of local and overseas artistic resources, we will continue to create more performance stages for students—so that music can serve as a vital cornerstone that inspires minds, shapes character, and enriches lives.
